Attributed to artist, Jessie Isabel Garrow (1899-1993)
Jessie trained at the Glasgow School of Art and married fellow artist, Ian Cheyne (1895-1955). Both artists appear in the Glasgow School of Art magazine ‘ The Palette’ in 1922.
Small ink drawing on card. Card is a bit soiled, design is bright. 26cm x 15.5cm. Actual size of illustration is 12cm x 12cm and it does have imperfections/alterations. Rear of drawing has a label ‘Alan D Guest, Nottingham’ & ‘Illustration by Jessie Isobel Garrow (Mrs Ian Cheyne). There is no signature on the illustration. I bought the illustration many years ago and remember trying to do some research but giving up fairly quickly because I didn’t seem to be getting anywhere. Role forward to 2024 and a cursory search now brings up a lot more information and I am indebted to the detailed piece about Jessie, on the Glasgow School of Art Archive website. A bit about Alan D Guest, I have been able to find out that he was the librarian at Nottingham College and a keen letter writer to the local newspaper.
